I leoni di marmo di San Prospero

The curious saddles that galloped genera-tions of Reggians are actually not saddles at all. They were indeed the bases that were to support the columns of the porticoed parvis that was to be built from the entrance to the basilica. The lions, a 1500s work attributed to Gaspare Bisi, are still waiting for the columns promised to them centuries ago. During their long wait, however, they are quite willing to bring anyone who feels bold enough to ride a lion!

San Prospero

The Basilica of San Prospero, located in Piazza San Prospero in the historic center of Reggio Emilia, is a Renaissance Catholic house of worship dedicated to the city’s patron saint. St. Prospero, a 5th-century bishop, is venerated for saving the city from Attila’s invasion, when a providential fog enveloped Reggio, preventing the Huns from noticing the town.

Il Municipio e la sala del tricolore

The Italian national flag was created in Reggio Emilia on January 7, 1797, when representatives of Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara proclaimed the white, red and green tricolor as the symbol of the Cispadane Republic, under French protection. The hall where the flag was born is now the seat of the City Council and hosts important civic events in the city.

Il Teatro Valli

The Romolo Valli Municipal Theater is an opera house located in Piazza Martiri del 7 luglio 1960, in the historic center of Reggio Emilia. Built between 1852 and 1857, it overlooks one of the city’s main squares. It is one of Italy’s best-preserved theaters, with original machinery and facilities for staging scenes, including winches, drums, spiral staircases, metal pipes for verbal communication, and machines for special effects such as thunder, rain, lightning,
wind, and flight

Le vele di Calatrava

The Calatrava bridges in Reggio Emilia, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, are three structures located along the A1 highway.
Characterized by modern and innovative lines, the bridges feature elegant white steel arches that give them a dynamic and harmonious appearance, blending perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

San Girolamo e Vitale

The Church of Saints Jerome and Vitale, located in the center of Reggio Emilia, is an artistic monument and place of worship.
Its nontraditional red brick facade, reminiscent of a Baroque palace, is surmounted by a crucifix. Also known as “the Rotunda” or “Church of the Angels and Saints,” it is famous for its decorations, including dome frescoes depicting
Heaven.

La Torre dell’orologio

The 47-meter-high Clock Tower is located in the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà and houses three bells cast using the “Nota a salto” method. The two smaller bells, created by “Jacobus de Regio,” bear the Estense coat of arms and one depicts St. Prospero in the Chair.
The larger bell, called “Forcarola,” warned of the execution of those sentenced to death.

L’antico caseificio del Parmigiano Reggiano

The ancient Parmigiano Reggiano cheese factories, also called “Caselli,” are small monuments of perforated terracotta, typical constructions for milk processing.
They are mostly found in the area included in the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia, Parma,
Mantua, and Bologna. They have a square or polygonal plan and their architecture is closely related to their function, namely the collection and resting of milk and its heating for cheese
production.

Il Duomo millenario

The duomo or cathedral of Reggio Emilia, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, is located in Prampolini Square in the city’s historic center. It is the main church of the
diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla. Originally built in Romanesque style around 857, it has been rebuilt and modified several times over the centuries, adapting to 15th-century architectural styles. It currently houses works by important contemporary artists.

La Chiesa di San Filippo

The Church of San Filippo, founded in 1672 and consecrated in 1743, has no visible facade and is located at the back of an old building, the Palazzo Masdoni (or Rocca Saporiti), one of the most prestigious in the city.
